If you could get married in any city in the world, where would it be? For Lizzie and Kevin the answer was simple – New York City, their favourite place in the world. Having seen photos of another wedding in NYC while visiting friends, and then looking around a venue and saying to each other, this is just not us, they decided to go for it and have the wedding of their dreams, just the two of them. They found their photographer on a blog and then discovered that his wife was an officiant so it only made sense that she married them! As Lizzie explains, “When we said “I do” we were in the moment together, just the two of us, and had nothing else to worry about. Our witness was our photographer, so we could have our first look at each other without any embarrassment. And then we got to have an EPIC party with all of our loved ones once we got home. It was just perfect for us.”

Lizzie and Kevin met at uni where they were best mates, always there for each other but never single at the same time! It wasn’t until a uni reunion seven years later that they were finally both available and Lizzie decided to bite the bullet and declare her feelings. Lizzie feels that at 18 they simply wouldn’t have worked, but by the time they got together they had both become “who we were meant to be.” It was a long-distance relationship at first, including Lizzie going travelling for seven months, but they kept in touch every day and seven years after they first got together Kevin proposed on a walk, taking advantage of Lizzie turning to take a photo of the view to get down on one knee.

“I moved down to Stevenage to live with Kevin but I’m an Ashby girl born and bred, so I really wanted to buy my dress from a shop in Ashby, with my Mum and best mates by my side. Alice Rose Bridal was the perfect place. As I was getting married in New York, I knew I needed a manageable dress. I tried on Audrey and thought she was beautiful but couldn’t decided if the train was too long, I almost ended up with another dress that was beautiful too, but without a train. However, when I was looking through the photos, I kept on getting drawn back to Audrey and started to ask myself, why can’t I have a beautiful train? I knew I could bustle it up and I kept on thinking, I need that dress! I felt bad keep switching between the 2 but Donna was so reassuring and enthusiastic throughout. I had my seamstress fitting closer to home – I can only begin to describe how it feels to have a dress fitted perfectly to you, making you the most beautiful version of you – but Donna then helped find a box that I could transport my dress in for the plane journey and even advised on how to pack it in the box!”

“My dress was just perfect for the day. It was so comfortable – I hardly noticed I was wearing it – and yet it just looked beautiful. The illusion back and train looked amazing – it was just perfect. Once we’d got married we spent three hours with the photographer visiting different places in NYC. Then we went for brunch in Brooklyn before heading back to the hotel in Manhattan to facetime families. People were shouting congrats to us all day and taking photos, and we even randomly bumped into Anna Hathaway outside The Plaza! My dress just got so much love all the time. Everyone said how beautiful it was.”

“My advice is you do you, hun! It’s your wedding, so spend your money on what you want to do. I would definitely recommend going to NYC to get married. So much information is available on the internet that it’s not hard to plan, and it’s also really cheap and easy to get a license – we even applied online to get a permit to have our small section of Central Park just for ourselves for short while. We got married in a wooden shelter in a secluded part of Central Park, but you can go as big or as little as you want. And then of course you can do it all again (including wearing your dress!) when you get home too!”
